Learning stays on your device.

The While extension and this website handle information differently. Here is each, in plain language.

The While extension

Version 0.5.1. Manual lessons work offline. Optional hooks communicate only locally.

Progress and drafts are stored locally.

Your learning progress and current sample draft live in VS Code’s private extension storage for each workspace. No account, API key, or server is involved.

Code matching is optional and bounded.

Only after you turn it on for a workspace, While reads your selection, or up to the first 200 lines of the active file, capped at 16 KiB. It never scans or indexes the repository.

Automatic hooks send only the minimum, and only locally.

If you connect them, hooks pass lifecycle information such as event type, session and turn identifiers, workspace, and time to a receiver on your own computer. While does not forward prompts or replies and does not read Codex transcripts.

Exports happen only when you ask.

An export contains the learning outcomes and timestamps you select, saved to a file you choose. There is no automatic upload.
